Journey Through the Rockies: A Week of Scenic Views, Local Flavors, and Hidden Gems
The first week of November was packed with adventures as I explored some of Canada's most beautiful destinations. From train rides to new friendships, karaoke mishaps, and unforgettable meals, here’s a day-by-day account of my journey.
Saturday, November 2: Sweet Train Rides and Korean Delights in Jasper
I boarded a train to Jasper, a smooth 4-hour ride made even sweeter by scoring a deal on VIA points from someone on Facebook. The journey was all about stunning landscapes, comfy chairs, and good vibes. Between naps and writing, the time flew by.
Once in Jasper, I checked into a cozy hostel called Jasper downtown hostel and had plans to meet someone for dinner.
When they couldn’t make it, I treated myself to Kimchi, a fantastic Korean spot.
After indulging in some great food, I headed to a bar called De'd Dog. Mostly filled with young people, I found a comfy sofa and chilled.
Walking back through town, I learned about a devastating fire that had destroyed half the city. Many locals are still without housing, and the area felt a bit like a ghost town. Despite that, the people were warm and welcoming.
Sunday, November 3: Writing Goals and an Elk Encounter
Breakfast at Lost Land started my day before I made my way to the library.
With a goal to write 50,000 words by the end of November, I joined NaNoWriMo and dove into my project.
After the library closed, I returned to the hostel, wrote some more, and met new friends for dinner. I finally tried poutine—fries with gravy and minced meat—not my thing. Later, we watched Ibelin on Netflix, a tearjerker that had me crying my eyes out.
Walking back to the hostel, I encountered a pack of elk grazing in a neighbor's yard. Such a surreal moment!
Monday, November 4: Exploring Jasper’s Aftermath and Making New Plans
I started my day with breakfast at Smitty’s, savoring chicken with plum sauce—divine!
Then, I walked over to the part of Jasper affected by the fire. The destruction was heartbreaking, and asbestos warnings kept everyone at a distance.
By evening, I finally secured a ride to Banff with Antonia, a fellow traveler via the Poparide app. We shared a meal—baguette for me and mac and cheese for her—before ending up at De'd Dog for another relaxed evening with locals.
Tuesday, November 5: Taco Tuesday and Karaoke Misadventures in Banff
We left Jasper at 10 a.m. and arrived in Banff by the afternoon.
I checked into Samesun Backpacker lodge, where the vibe was friendly, and my roommates were chatty.
For dinner we had tacos at the hostel for only $3 for one, we joined the fun at Melissa’s Missteak for karaoke, but it wasn’t the smoothest. The host struggled with the tech, but I still had a blast singing my heart out.
Wednesday, November 6: A Hair Makeover and BBQ Bliss
After a lazy morning, I booked a much-needed hair appointment at B-Towne Salon. With split ends gone and a fresh color, I felt fabulous! I also stopped for breakfast but the pai was so tiny. And still pricey...
Antonia and I had plans for a steakhouse, but a local hairdresser’s reaction convinced us to try Chuck’s Steakhouse instead. Great choice—the BBQ ribs were out of this world.
Thursday, November 7: Stunning Lake Louise and Cozy Nights
Antonia had already been on a morning hike when I was getting out of bed, but we decided to visit Lake Louise together. The views were breathtaking, even if I was a bit cautious on the icy trails without spikes.
In the evening, we grabbed burgers at the hostels bar and took it easy, savouring the day’s beauty.
Friday, November 8: Shopping in Banff and a Night Out in Calgary
We spent the morning strolling through Banff. While I searched for headphones and a blouse, Antonia found a stylish jacket. The shopkeepers were so friendly, asking about our travels—a far cry from shopping in Norway.
By afternoon, we made it to Calgary and settled into HI Calgary Hostel. Dinner was a flavorful Indian feast, and the night ended with birthday celebrations at The Unicorn, hopping between pubs and wrapping up at a karaoke bar.
Reflections on the Road
This week reminded me of how much travel is about connection—whether it’s meeting new friends, discovering local gems, or hearing the stories of resilient communities. From the serenity of the Rockies to the vibrancy of Calgary’s nightlife, every moment brought something new.
What’s next? Stay tuned as I continue this journey!
