Adventures in Winnipeg: Karaoke, Kindness, and Cold Rooms

Adventures in Winnipeg: Karaoke, Kindness, and Cold Rooms

Saturday, November 23: Arrival and Karaoke Connections

The day began early, with Leslie ensuring I got to my Poparide on time. My ride to Winnipeg was with a kind family from India, and despite my intentions to enjoy the scenery, I slept most of the way—so much for “taking in the country”!

Settling into my hotel was a mixed experience. I lucked out with an upgrade to a suite, but it was freezing. The tiny heater made more noise than warmth.

Determined not to let the cold get to me, I ventured out to explore. Heads-up for anyone using public transport in Winnipeg: buses don’t accept card payments. Luckily, the driver let me ride for free.

I found my way to Shannon’s, a local karaoke bar. Outside, I met James, who had been waiting for his friends. Since they were late, I invited him to join me. We chatted over a comforting shepherd’s pie—courtesy of James, who kindly picked up the tab. Later, his friends turned out to have been at the bar all along, and they welcomed me into their group.

The karaoke system was unique, with a whiteboard on stage where singers signed up. It was a lively night, but the long queue meant I only got to sing twice in two hours. Still, the atmosphere was fantastic, and I capped off the night with an Uber ride back to my chilly suite.

Sunday, November 24: Food and Boujee Karaoke

A slow start to the day led me to a cozy Indian spot nearby for lunch.

Later, I discovered Boujee on Main Street, another karaoke bar with a more relaxed vibe. The smaller crowd meant I could sing to my heart’s content, making up for the previous night.

Walking back didn’t seem appealing, so I took the bus home, content with the day’s adventures and ready to crawl under my warm duvet.

Monday, November 25: Movies and Board Game Magic

The cold in my room kept me bundled under the duvet until the afternoon. Eventually, I ventured out to catch Red One, an entertaining movie that made the trip worthwhile.

Afterward, I walked to The Legion, where I stumbled upon a free board game night. With no expectations, I ended up learning Cribbage with Nelly, Ellen, and Bodo. Though the ladies left early, Bodo and I continued with a spirited game of Rummikub before he kindly drove me back to the hotel.

Reflections on Winnipeg

From karaoke nights with strangers-turned-friends to finding warmth in unexpected places, my time in Winnipeg has been a blend of challenges and charming encounters. Even the cold couldn’t dampen the heartwarming kindness of the people here.

Stay tuned as I continue this journey through Canada!
