A Memorable Iceland Adventure: Exploring Reykjavik, Hot Springs, and Hikes

Friday 4th of October

If you’re anything like me, early mornings are best left untouched. So, when I found myself needing to catch a super early flight, I treated myself to a night at the Radisson SAS in Oslo. Little did I know, my Icelandic adventure would kick off with some unexpected twists and turns. Here’s a recap of my Iceland escapade, complete with a few mishaps, unique sights, and memorable encounters.

Arrival in Reykjavik: A Minor Misadventure

Upon landing in Reykjavik, I had Rikey’s detailed instructions for getting to her place by bus. Armed with Google Maps and my keen sense of direction, I was confident. But somehow, despite my best efforts, I ended up somewhere else! Apparently, the bus I was on only went as far as the city center, and I needed to change buses to reach my destination. Ah, the joys of travel!

Rikey had arranged a gathering at the JCI house, so once I finally arrived, the evening picked up. It was wonderful catching up with JCI Iceland members and reconnecting with an old friend from my days on the JCI Norway national board back in 2009, at that time he was national presiden of JCI Iceland. We played drinking games, dived into a round of Cards Against Humanity, and even had plans to head out on the town. But my early morning start had caught up with me, and I turned in early. Age creeping up, perhaps?

Exploring Reykjavik: Yarn, Cake, Lighthouse Adventure and Hvammsvik hot springs.

The next day, we explored downtown Reykjavik, browsing unique shops and picking up some Icelandic yarn for my mom at "Litla prjona budin". Our next destination was Grotta, a lighthouse accessible only during low tide. With perfect weather and stunning views, it was the ideal little escape. A must-visit stop was a vegan café called Plantan kaffihus where I indulged in a massive slice of chocolate cake. As someone allergic to eggs, it was a rare treat to choose from several cake options—an absolute delight! But our day of relaxation was just beginning! We had reservations at Hvammsvik, an outdoor hot spring retreat with seven different hot springs and the option to dip into the sea or relax in a steam sauna. While soaking in one of the hottest pools, we met fellow JCI members from Wisconsin. Such a small world!

Later, we grabbed some groceries and made pulled pork burgers with fries, and ended the night with a classic movie: White Chicks.

Hiking Adventure: Nesjalaugar geothermal area

Sunday morning came with an ambitious plan. Rikey and I aimed to start early, but let’s be real—I’m not exactly a morning person, and it turns out, neither is she. Once we were finally up and about, we set off for a “small hike” at Nesjalaugar geothermal area. Let me tell you, it was more challenging than advertised!

After 1,5 hours of trekking, I joked that a helicopter was waiting for us at the top. We did spot one, but it was for tourists. The hike, though tough, offered breathtaking views, and photos simply don’t do it justice.

Once we made it back, we headed to a food hall to refuel. I enjoyed some pasta, while Rikey opted for classic fish and chips. We spent the rest of the night chatting and booked my bus ticket to the airport.

Wrapping Up: Lessons Learned and Icelandic Memories

I woke up around 10 and packed my bags for the journey home. Since I haven’t trusted a fart in over 10 years because of IBS, I opted for a light breakfast—fearing that getting stuck in the bathroom might make me miss my flight!

At the airport, everything went smoothly, but I did realize I’d left my headphones at Rikey’s place. Luckily, I found a cheap replacement on the plane and entertained myself with movies instead of sleep, which, looking back, might not have been the wisest decision.

This Icelandic adventure reminded me how travel can be equal parts excitement and mishap. From exploring Reykjavik and meeting people from across the world to discovering hidden gems like Hvammsvik and Grotta, every moment was unforgettable. Whether you’re a fellow night owl or an early riser, Iceland’s unique charm offers something for everyone.

Planning a trip to Iceland? Don’t forget to embrace the unexpected—it’s what makes the journey truly memorable. And if you’re navigating by bus, be sure to double-check those stops!
